Hello! My name is Sarah and I am a student who is about to do some serious experiential learning thanks to Heifer International and Truman State University. I have been given the opportunity to volunteer as the Administration and Education Volunteer at Heifer International's Overlook Farm in Rutland, MA. I am so excited to be able to volunteer with this organization and to learn what it's like to work for a non-profit in a real world setting.
As a student studying English I run across the constant question, especially as my collegiate career continues, "what are you doing after you graduate?" This is a question which I derive no pleasure in hearing because it draws on the ever dwindling time I have left at my beloved institution of higher education. Despite the chagrin of answering the question, I am able to say that, no, I do not have the aspiration of becoming a writer or a teacher...rather it is my intent to go on to graduate school for a Masters in Social Work (MSW).
This past summer I was involved with an amazing organization called Bike and Build which organizes cross-country cycling trips for young adults all with the intention of bringing awareness and aid to the affordable housing crisis in this country. After leading a life dedicated to helping others throughout the summer I came to realize that this is a career path I would like to follow. One of the numerous career ideas which float about in my head is that of working for a non-profit. There is no better way of discerning if this is to be my life's work than to actually experience life as a person working for such an organization; thus this internship.
I am extremely privileged to have the support of my university in this endeavor. To have the ability to enrich this experience through the internship process is such a blessing. For this I will be writing in this blog on a (minimum) weekly basis as well as keeping a daily personal journal of my experience. Given that I have yet to begin this next adventure I am still not positive all of the things I will need to do while in Massachusetts, but suffice it to say I am ready and willing to begin next experience. I leave at the very beginning of next month, so prior to that I most likely will not be updating this blog.
Until we meet again!
Sarah
